LEADERSHIP

“Everything rises and falls on leadership”- J.C. Maxwell.

Africa our motherland is the second largest and second most populous continent in the world. Africa covers six percent of the earth’s total surface area and 20.4% of its total land area with 1.3 billion people as of January 2021, which account for about 16.72% of the total world human population. Africa ranks number 2 among regions of the world (roughly equivalent to continents) ordered by population, it has fifty-four (54) fully recognized sovereign states (countries),eight (8) territories and two (2) de facto independent states with limited or no recognition.

Africa is rich in natural resources ranging from arable land, water, oil, natural gas, minerals, forest and wildlife. The continent holds a huge proportion of the world’s natural resources, both renewable and non-renewable.

Africa is home to some 30% of the world’s mineral reserves, 8% of the world natural gas, and 12% of the world oil reserve: the continent has 40% of the world’s gold and up to 90% the world chromium and platinum. The largest reserves of cobalt, diamond, platinum and uranium in the world are in Africa. Africa holds 65% of the world arable lands, 10% of internal renewable fresh water source.

Now a significant share of these resources is however used unsustainably while others are lost through illegal activities, meaning that the stream of benefits generated from the resources is being reduced over time. For instance, Africa loses an estimated $195 billion annually of its natural capital through illicit financial flows, illegal mining, illegal logging, and illegal trade in wildlife, unregulated fishing environment, degradation and loss, among others.

Collectively, the continent has a lot gains in pulling together and harnessing its vast natural resources to finance the development agenda towards greater prosperity. It is appalling in the midst of all these wealth that Africans still live in abject poverty, lack of access to quality healthcare, education, backwardness and underdevelopment according to the United Nations human development report.

Is it not ironic that despite all-natural endowments Africa possesses, it still seems to be the struggling continent?

All these failures are primarily traceable to the lack of good leadership in Africa among other factors. Everything indeed rises and falls on leadership.  According to Sun Tzu, “leadership is a matter of intelligence, trustworthiness, courage, discipline and humanness; reliance on intelligence alone results in rebelliousness, exercise of humanness alone results in weakness, fixation of trust result in folly, dependence on the strength of courage result in violence, excessive discipline and sternness in command result in cruelty but when one has all the virtues together each appropriate to its function then one can be an outstanding leader.

Because of the manner with which Africans perceived leadership without proper education and leadership skills, Standtall Africa Initiative in collaboration with her partners globally have passionately invested time and resources into developing seasoned leaders in all sense of leadership to take Africa to its proper place globally.
